“Battle of the Bills” is a really cool gamification of United States civics. Kids are broken into teams and are asked to create their own political party, a basic platform, and of course a fabulous name! They’ll then select a local community issue to target that needs to be addressed. Each kid will then draft a bill to remedy the matter and will present it to peers at a meeting of the Kids’ Congress. There will be voting, amending, and disagreeing, and civic engagement in its purest form. But we also reflect and introspect, and consider empathy’s impact. We’ll learn the power of cooperation and why compromise makes a DiF-ference. And of course, we flex our stuff with critical reasoning, argumentation, and persuasion. This DiF Mini is where kids realize and learn that we can disagree without disparagement in the public square.
